Education MA
If you’re a certified elementary, middle, or high school teacher you can expand your content knowledge in computer science, mathematics, and STEM. Study topics like culturally responsive instruction, equity in education, educational research, and more. The computer science content area is the first and only program of its kind in Maryland. This content area was created in response to the Maryland state mandate for a computer science teacher to be in place at 100% of Maryland high schools by 2021.
College Teaching & Learning Science
Current and aspiring faculty can earn a post-master’s certificate to learn how to reach, retain, and successfully educate college learners. Study online and complete the Quality Matters Rubric workshop at the same time to get certified in online teaching. This one year program covers key topics like reaching students with motivation strategies, assessing college-level learning, and designing courses using innovative practices.

Teaching MA
Whether you are starting out as a teacher or are seeking new career, at UMBC you can earn a master’s in teaching (MAT) in a range of programs–from early childhood to elementary to ESOL–even a twelve-month secondary education program! You’ll join a network of educators focused on developing the personal strengths of their students and supporting the communities in which they work. UMBC teaches graduates to respect diversity, to be leaders in their schools, and to advocate for democracy and social justice.
TESOL
The TESOL program at UMBC is designed to train both prospective and experienced teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). We provide students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in applied linguistics, language acquisition, ESL/EFL methods, testing, cross-cultural studies and curriculum development. Students in the MA program can choose to add on K-12 ESOL certification. UMBC also offers a Graduate Certificate in ESOL. Courses for the MA and Certificate can be taken both face-to-face and online.

Aging Studies
With one American turning 60 every 8 seconds, the “graying of America” will touch every aspect of society, creating unprecedented challenges and opportunities. It is no wonder that aging studies is in high-demand–a field where you can do what you love while you do well. UMBC’s Master’s program in Management of Aging Services provides an interdisciplinary approach by taking an integrated look at the most important, cutting edge information in aging, policy, and management, and will equip you with the skills to lead government agencies, non-profit organizations, businesses, and more. You’ll gain key insight into topics like strategy, marketing, operations, finance, and accounting, leaving you with a well-rounded set of skills that will allow you to make a real impact and change lives.
Applied Sociology
Emphasizing the “practical side” of sociology and analytic skills, UMBC’s graduate programs in Applied Sociology prepare students for work at such private and public organizations as Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Social Security Administration, National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Aging, Bureau of the Census, Maryland Department of Health, and more. Courses are offered in the evenings once a week to accommodate your schedule, and you can complete the program as a full-time or part-time student.
